Confronting the Mind Killer

How facing fear empowers us

When it comes to creating or doing just about anything requiring you to put yourself out there, fear is always present. It doesn’t matter if it’s front and center or lurking in the depths of your subconscious, it has a way of making its presence known. When I decided to pursue writing seriously and put my words out there, fear was, and still is, a constant companion.

I was sitting with my husband talking about this very issue. He asked me if I were to approach a body of water, do I take my time or just dive right in. More often than not, I would cautiously approach the waves on the beach, feet first, and gradually acclimate the rest of my body to the temperature of the water.

When I told him this, he began to extol the virtues of diving right in. I saw his point because I can appreciate that there’s freedom and power in boldly facing and conquering the unknown.

Being the science fiction fan that he is, my husband has shared his favorite quote with me many times. It was from the movie Dune, which we watched together earlier this week.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to
